Chapter 12

At Margot’s request, Radcliff and his partner agreed to interview the kids at Uncle Cole’s. Since there were four of them, Radcliff recruited Detectives Copeland and Gnomes to help out. Margot, Cole, and Polis waited in the kitchen while the detectives did their work. After about an hour, Radcliff joined them.

“Learn anything?” Polis asked.

“Not much more than what you guys told me. Learned more examples of really bad parenting, but we already knew their mom was a piece of crap.”

“Doesn’t look good on my partner, does it?”

“No, I guess not, but I think it means he might be alive. The working theory is the body in his car was one of the Boog’s leftover disciples that Wintar got the jump on.”

“Stuffing the body in the trunk ain’t exactly doing it by the book.”

“No,” Radcliff replied, “but things happen.”

“Someone still got his badge and gun,” Polis pointed out.

“Yeah, and even though we’re closer to why, I don’t think we’re any closer to who.”

“Or to finding Wintar,” Polis added.

“We know more than we did yesterday,” Margot said, “That’s something.”

“Look at you being Ms. Brightside.”

Margot shrugged. “Somebody has to do it. I guess I should set them up with Ms. X.”

“You two back on speaking terms?”

“No, she still thinks I’m a walking death machine, but she’ll deal with Shaw, and he still likes me.”

Margot stood up to make the call in private but stopped when Detective Copeland came into the kitchen.

“I’ve got something. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it sooner.”

“What?” Radcliff asked.

“The kid gave me a partial ID on the John Doe in the back of Wintar’s car. Seems he was an occasional visitor. Even better, he didn’t come alone. He usually showed up with a girl and another guy. You want to guess who the other guy is?”

“The fake Wintar?” Margot asked.

“Bingo.”

“He know their names?”

“Not really. He heard some names, but they sounded like nicknames. Shit like Shooter and Legs.”

“Hold on,” Cole said. “Let me see those pictures.”

Copeland pulled them up on his phone.

“Yeah, I’ve seen these guys. The guy with the pale face is Shooter. He looked better the last time I saw him.”

“He should. He’s dead in this photo.”

“Oh.”

“The other guy, Legs?”

“No,” Cole replied, “that was the girl. This dude was Spider.”

“You never heard them called anything else?”

“No, I didn’t like them. They put off a bad vibe. I kept my distance.”

“Kid said the same thing. Sounds like you all have good instincts.”

“They arrived in a van; I do remember that.”

“A minivan or more of a work van?”

“Neither: Volkswagen. I remember asking if they did a lot of camping in it since even though the windows were tinted they had curtains. It sticks out because the answer I got kind of gave me the creeps.”

“What did they say?”

“‘You could call it that if you want.’ Which on its own isn’t all that creepy, but the way he said it was. Plus, I know the kind of trouble my sister could get in, or at least some of it and these were her friends.
